2005 USA Climbing Nationals
March 5th and 6th, 2005
The 2005 USA Climbing National Championship was a blast! Held at Mission Cliffs on March 5th and 6th and presented by Sterling and Stone Age, the event decided the 2005 US Climbing Teams. Over 75 competitors from all over the US and Canada convened for a weekend of national-caliber climbing action.
Both the Men's and Women's Open divisions were tough out of the gate. The Asher and Broun sisters out of Texas dominated the show -- 6 of 10 women finalists hailed from the Lone Star State. The men were mostly Californians with some Coloradans, New Yorkers and Canadians thrown in. The top 6 men's finalists flashed their first three routes in good form, and to up the ante, Ethan Pringle, Vadim Vinokur and Sean McColl also flashed their 5.13d final route. As the route-setters set and tweaked their super-final, the Masters division finals cranked through their routes, with a 7-way tie for 1st in Men's C leading them to a super-final as well. But the show wasn't over until Ethan, Vadim and Sean came out and tore up their last route of the day, leaving Sean McColl on the winner's podium with Ethan in a close 2nd and Vadim right behind. For the Women, Emily Harrington took the top honors, with Elizabeth Broun on her tail and Lizzy Asher in 3rd.
Big thanks to Sterling for the ropes and $6,000 travel stipend/purse and Stone Age for the 150 brand-spanking-new shapes! See you at the next big Touchstone comp: ABS6 Nationals at Berkeley Ironworks on March 18th and 19th!
